Dr. Mathias Fonkam the Dean and an Associate Professor of Computer Science in the School of Information Technology & Computing at the AUN. He holds a PhD in Computer Science and an MSc in Systems Engineering; both from Cardiff University, UK. He joined AUN in Jan 2006 after a distinguished international career both in academia and the software industry in the Silicon Valley in California. His prior academic experience spans 3 universities: as a Visiting Professor at the Federal University of Maranhao, Sao Luis, Brazil (Oct 1993 to Nov 1997), Visiting Assistant Professor at St Joseph’s University in Philadelphia (2002-2004) and Associate Professor at Albany State University, GA (2004-2006). From 1998 to 2002 Dr. Fonkam worked in the US Software Industry, during the boom and eventual burst of the dot com industry in California and elsewhere; working with companies like Mosakin Corp, Millenia Vision and Blue Martini Consulting. He returned to academia in 2002 where he claims his real passion is.

Dr. Fonkam joined SITC in Jan 2006 as one of its founding faculty and has been instrumental in shaping the direction and output for that school and turning it into a flagship school at AUN. As an instructor and researcher he has elaborated and taught well over 16 courses in computing majors and published several research papers in the area, many of them with his students and faculty colleagues. He has served many other roles in that school:  SITC curriculum coordinator, chair of the computer science program, associate dean, interim dean and dean. He also served as the founding Faculty Adviser for the AUN Honors Society. He is the founder of a community and industry systems laboratory (CISLAB) for incubation of industry projects as a joint effort between AUN faculty, students and industry partners. As dean of SITC, his vision for the school is to lead it to becoming a center of excellence in ICTs not just in Nigeria but within the entire Sub-Sahara Africa region serving as a key pillar for AUN’s mission as a Development University.

He is a big advocate for Open Source Technologies and has initiated and led the implementation of several open source systems currently being used at AUN including the OpenERP system that serves as the main enterprise resource planning system, the SITC Faculty portal and the Canvas Learning Management System. He is also passionate about the Systems Dynamics approach and actively promotes  ("evangelizes" even) its application to addressing the myriad of systemic issues plaguing management and leaders at all levels in Nigeria and much of the Sub Sahara Africa region.
