19. COVID-19: #Sing4Life

My dear learning community,

Hello Tuesday! Normally all of us would be at work or school today. COVID-19 continues to hold us hostage at home, challenging us to be “alone together.” Group video chats, Netflix binge sessions, creative meal preparation with what’s available in our kitchen cabinets, cursing the slow internet speed, and adjusting to WFH and LFH is our new normal.

And yet, somehow there is joy, the human spirit finds a way. Bono, activist and lead singer for the rock band U2, was inspired to write a ballad for the Italians fighting COVID-19. Releasing it on his Instagram page on March 17, St Patrick’s Day, Bono sings to the Italians, “Let Your Love Be Known.” He captioned his Instagram post with these words:

“For the Italians who inspired it… for the Irish… for ANYONE who this St Patrick’s Day is in a tight spot and still singing. For the doctors, nurses, carers on the front line, it’s you we’re singing to.”

His song caught the attention of other musical artists, who then collaborated with Bono to take the song further, quickly becoming the global ode to this pandemic era. The song was retitled “Sing For Life” and the video showcases Bono, Will.i.am, Jennifer Hudson, and Yoshiki singing and playing piano from their homes around the world.

This letter will be about COVID-19: #Sing4Life

Here is the Youtube link for the song:

Will.i.am added this caption to the song:

“This song was created to bring JOY… In times like these, creative people must continue to collaborate… Whether you are a computer scientist, an engineer, a therapist or a teacher, just because we are self-isolating or in quarantine doesn’t mean you are alone… The beauty of international connectivity is that nobody is alone on the internet! Use this time to be creative and collaborate remotely to solve problems… A healthy body also means a healthy mind…”

For those who cannot access the Youtube video, I provide the lyrics below:

SING FOR LIFE

By Bono, Will.i.am, Jennifer Hudson, and Yoshiki

Bono:

Yes, there was silence

Yes, there was no people here

Yes, I walked through the streets of Dublin

And no one was near.

Will.i.am:

We all wait for the science

To make everything clear.

Now I walk down the streets of London Town,

It seems like everyone’s disappeared

Oh, no one to reach.

Bono:

But I can ring.

You can’t touch,

But you can, you can sing

Across rooftops,

Sing

Down the phone.

Sing,

Promise me you won’t stop.

Sing your love, be known.

Oh, let your love be known.

Will.i.am:

Everybody talkin’ ‘bout isolation.

Jennifer Hudson:

So I see

Will.i.am:

Everybody tryin’ not to feel the fear.

Jennifer Hudson:

Oh Oh Ohh…

Will.i.am:

The times got me worryin’

‘bout my occupation… damn.

And I can’t buy tissue for my tears… damn.

Bono:

Maybe I said the wrong thing

Jennifer Hudson:

No you didn’t, no you didn’t, no you didn’t, no…

Bono:

Yes, I made you smile.

Will.i.am:

Yes, you did, but it’s…

Yoshiki on piano

Will.i.am:

Everybody talkin’ ‘bout social distancin’,

But we just wanna go in the crowd

And just dance

Jennifer Hudson:

Dance

Will.i.am:

Away the pain

Jennifer Hudson:

Away the pain

Bono:

But you can’t touch,

But you can, you can sing,

Across rooftops,

Jennifer Hudson:

Ohh sing

Bono:

To me down the phone.

Jennifer Hudson:

Ohh Ohh sing,

Bono:

Promise me you won’t stop.

Sing, you’re never alone.

And again…

Sing

Will.i.am:

As an act of resistance. Come on…

Bono:

Sing

Though your heart is overthrown.

Jennifer Hudson:

Sing

Bono:

To sing, there is no distance,

So let your love be known.

Oh, let your love be known.

Though your heart is overthrown,

Let your love be known.

Oh, let your love be known.

Though your heart is overthrown,

Jennifer Hudson:

Let your love show.
