Being in college can be fun and exciting, but it can also be an overwhelming experience, with a lot to do and seemingly little time to complete them. In college, students are expected to be involved in their learning experiences so that they can contribute effectively and perform well in class. They also need to take advantage of extracurricular opportunities, use the support services freely available, and prepare themselves for life after graduation. All these involve the acquisition or enhancement of competencies for successful college life.
On September 13, the Writing Center resumed the skill-building workshops for the semester with ‘’How to be a Successful College Student.” It was designed to help first-year students to set the pace early for success in their academic journey and pleasant student life at AUN.
The presentation was segmented into three. The first was an exposition of students’ responsibilities towards their studies, appreciating the importance of class attendance, learning the Cornell method of note-taking, conducting independent study, participating actively in class through asking engaging questions or confidently responding when information is requested.
Attendees were encouraged to create time to study outside class hours because college success also depends on this strategy, and in effective time management. The facilitator highlighted the importance of office hour visits, stating that these open conversations about student strengths and weaknesses in given areas and give the instructors opportunities to provide feedback about concerns. Active academic engagements in and out of class also show that students are taking ownership of their education.
The second phase of the presentation dwelt on the need for students to get involved in extracurricular activities by attending on-campus events, developing new skills at seminars, being a team or club members, making reliable friends, and more importantly enjoying the social scenes. To balance academic and extracurricular activities in college, students were taught to organize their time – make flexible and realistic schedules that do not jeopardize their studies and work with them.
The third part educated students on how to prepare for their graduation at AUN. They were advised to choose the right classes, keep track of their progress, and seek available support on how to deal with disappointments in their studies. Students were advised to consult with the Career Services Office for general information about industry-experience openings and the career fairs that hold yearly. In addition, students were encouraged to find internships and other related positions which would give them opportunities to apply their knowledge and enhance their skills in a work environment. AUN work-study opportunities build one rigorously in this regard and through them, students gain valuable professional experience for post-graduation opportunities.
Student engagement during the impactful presentations was very high and the session concluded on a very positive note.
