AUN’s Governance & Human Rights Center hosts inaugural treatise on March 9

The AUN Center for Governance, Development and Human Rights (GDHR) announces the launch of its new seminar series beginning March 9, 2020. The series will present scholarly research from the AUN community as well as from elsewhere in Africa, Europe, Asia, and North America.

The Center will reflect and encourage interdisciplinary scholarly research across all the faculties at AUN as well as host visiting scholars who are in Yola doing research. The first visiting scholar, a doctoral student from Australia, is expected to be at the Center in September 2020. 

The Center's Director, Professor William Bill Hansen kicks off the seminar series on Monday, March 9, 2020. Professor Hansen, who teaches Politics & International Studies will deliver a paper on "Parasites and Predators: The Post-Colonial State in Nigeria".

GDHR was launched by the Provost, Professor Muhammadou Kah, in June 2019 and was allocated space in December. It has since been engaged in getting the physical facility, located on the middle floor of the Robert Pastor Library, up and running. Professor Bill Hansen is the Director and Jennifer Mike from the School of Law is Co-Director. The GDHR Seminar series is the first public manifestation of its activities.The GDHR is also the AUN unit involved in the Islamic Protest, Terrorism and Security in Africa (IPTSA) research project that focusses on Boko Haram and the Lake Chad Basin. IPTSA, a consortium headed by York University in Canada, is a multi-national research project that has already received a CAN$198,000 partnership grant (to put together the actual components of the research project) from the Canadian Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) and is applying for a much larger grant to conduct the actual research.GDHR plans to publish a selected number of the Seminar papers in a series of working papers. A Journal of Nigerian Studies is also on the outlook for GDHR.
