About TE

Tuition Exchange (TE) was chartered in 1954 as a nonprofit corporation that promotes and monitors exchange scholarships for faculty and staff dependents at participating colleges and universities. Over 600 colleges and universities from 47 states, the District of Columbia, and other countries participate in the TE program.

The Tuition Exchange Program allows eligible dependents to receive undergraduate scholarships at one of the member institutions (hereafter referred to as the host institution). The TE Program is a scholarship, not a fringe benefit provided by the American University of Nigeria.

Acceptance into the TE Program will be for first baccalaureate degrees only. Participants for graduate study, non-degree studies, or second undergraduate degrees will not be considered. Participation in the program will generally be for four successive years of education (12 quarters, eight semesters, or the equivalent) as long as the student is enrolled and in good academic standing at the host institution. Any eligible dependent not currently utilizing the TE Program is eligible to apply at any point during their undergraduate studies for the upcoming fall term.

Employee Eligibility Guidelines

  • Applicants must be full-time employees and must have completed at least one year of service at the American University of Nigeria.
  • Applicants shall be responsible for the non-tuition expenses depending on the institution of choice for the duration of the course.
  • Should an applicant leave the services of the University prior to the completion of his/her child’s TE program, the tuition exchange opportunity will terminate.
  • The Tuition Exchange shall only be accessed by employees once in five (5) years while in employment with the American University of Nigeria.
  • The minimum age limit for an applicant’s dependent must NOT be below eighteen (18) years.
  • If an applicant dies or retires before the completion of his dependent child education through TE, the child will be permitted to remain in the program.
  • Applicants must be in good standing with the University with no unresolved disciplinary issues i.e. Such an applicant must be free from any administrative misconduct for which he may have been disciplined within the year of the scholarship award.
  • The applicant’s dependent must meet the academic and admission requirement of the participating institution where the tuition exchange is sought.

However, please note that certification of eligibility does not guarantee acceptance at the host institution or assure acceptance into the TE Program.

Value of a TE Scholarship

The scholarship typically covers tuition at the host institution, excluding room, board, special fees, and other non-tuition expenses. To address variations in tuition costs, Tuition Exchange implements a policy. High-tuition institutions may award less than full tuition, but never less than the minimum amount set annually by the TE Board of Directors. These minimum values are determined through analysis of member institutions' tuition and are announced a year in advance, available on the TE website. Families should also consult each host institution for their specific TE guidelines, as policies may vary.
A TE Scholarship will cover four successive undergraduate years, but Tuition Exchange has the right to limit the number of students or years of eligibility to new incoming or outgoing students if the number of incoming students is not in balance with the number of students in the TE Program going to other colleges and universities. TE would also have the right to reduce the number of colleges available in the program. Eligibility must be recertified each year. Host institutions have the right to terminate TE scholarships if students do not meet clearly articulated standards of academic performance or personal conduct. These limitations or restrictions will be clearly stated on the Certification Form that will be provided to you by the host institution if you are approved for a TE Scholarship.
