Interim chair of the Department of Public Law, SoL, Dr. Jennifer Mike has emphasized the role universities play in society through teaching and community engagement.
Professor Jennifer Mike, who attended and presented at the Sustainable Communities Conference from June 16-19, 2022, at Albion College in Michigan, United States, outlined how AUN as an academic institution prepares students to serve as active participants in national development, as well as stimulate their service potentials to contribute to their immediate and extended communities.
The Assistant Professor of Law and Director of the AUN Centre for Governance, Human Rights and Development (CGHRD) spoke on "The Role of Universities in Transforming Society Through Direct Community Engagements and Education."
Using AUN as a case study, Professor Jennifer illustrates how a university could take a communitarian approach to education to promote the common good in its operations and the lessons other institutions can learn from AUN's development-oriented activities and pedagogy.
She described how an academic institution could equip students to act as drivers of national development and foster their service potential to contribute to their immediate and extended communities.
The conference brought academics and community service experts from around the globe to debate the vital responsibilities that universities and higher education can play in fostering the growth of society.
