Community Service: CAB Reaches Out to Deaf Students in Jimeta

On November 25, 2022, AUN students, under the auspices of the Campus Activities Board (CAB), visited the Jimeta Deaf Center to engage with the special pupils and share the season's joy with them. The students were led by the President of CAB, Ms. Adanna Obiakwu, and Mr. Ahmed Aliyu, Assistant Director, Community Service. It was during break time, and the AUN student team went along with goodies like Caprisone juice and lollypops for the deaf pupils at the Center.

The kids' enthusiasm and excitement at seeing the AUN Coaster bus carrying the AUN students were evident; they could not contain their eagerness for the upcoming interaction.

Ms. Adanna, the President of the CAB, was overcome with emotion as she handed the present bundles to the children, who expressed gratitude through hand gestures and sign language.

"Over the course of my four years at AUN, I've observed CAB's activities on campus, but we've never brought it out to the community to generate fun and make the children feel like they're a part of us, so we decided to bring it out to make the children feel loved. You already know that I adore children," she remarked.

Ms. Adanna also asked the pupils what they wanted to be when they grew up, to which they enthusiastically responded that they wanted to be engineers, doctors, tailors, and teachers. The children also described their favorite colors.

Mr. Irvin Sejersen, a Danish philanthropist who is donating a Deaf Center to the school, thanked the AUN students for their generosity, stating that he is delighted with what the students are doing to improve the lives of the Yola people. Therefore, the Center's administration pleaded with CAB members to attend the building's dedication event.

The Head of the Deaf Center Chaplaincy, Rev. Mrs. Ruth Ulea, appreciated AUN students for their generous act and promised to educate any student who wants to study Sign Language in two weeks. She also returned the favor by distributing copies of her published book, "Step to Sign Language," to every AUN student and staff member present.
