Law Professor and SAN, Shares advice with AUN Law Students

In a symposium organized by AUN Law Students to mark the 2024 Law Week, Prof. Maxwell Gidado, SAN and former Attorney General of Adamawa, shared constructive advice for law students aspiring to venture into private practice. He emphasized the need to attend court proceedings regularly to understand better, the legal profession's pros and cons, which is essential for success in the field.

He elucidated that upon completing an LL.B degree, one can apply for admission into the Nigeria Law School for a mandatory one-year legal training that culminates in being called to the Bar. Upon a successful call to the Nigerian Bar bestows the title of 'Barrister,' a highly esteemed recognition in the legal profession.

Prof. Maxwell urged law students to carefully deliberate on their priorities and needs, considering the myriad career paths a law graduate can embark on. These options include serving as Law Officers in state and federal ministries, becoming law professors, providing legal counsel to industries, pursuing political careers, or practicing as Barristers or Solicitors.

He also clarified that only those with B.L. should be addressed as Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Nigeria. In contrast, those who have LLB but were not called to the Bar should never be addressed as Barristers but as Lawyers.

The event was held on April 3, 2024, at the School of Law Lecture Hall as part of a symposium organized by the AUN Law Students as part of activities marking 2024 Law Week.
