The American University of Nigeria (AUN) has taken a significant step toward enhancing student representation and strengthening campus participation with the official launch of the Student Government Association (SGA) Hut on March 30, 2026. Designed as a functional center for dialogue, support, and collaboration, the hut marks a transformative moment for student governance at AUN.
The event drew top university officials, student leaders, and a diverse gathering of students, all highlighting the hut’s potential to make student government more accessible, visible, and responsive to the needs of the AUN community. SGA leadership emphasized that the project reflects their renewed commitment to fostering meaningful student involvement.
Unveiling the facility, AUN President Prof. DeWayne Frazier praised the initiative as a testament to student innovation and leadership in improving campus life. He also recognized recent development efforts made possible through student and alumni support, including Alum Park, funded by a former SGA member and his sister, and the renovation of the outdoor lawn tennis court. “I take pride in what you are doing, and I thank you for it,” stated Prof. Frazier.
Former SGA President Abdulraman Bapullo described the hut as a strategic addition that strengthens the relationship between students and their elected representatives. He noted that the space will enable students to voice concerns, seek guidance, and engage more actively in campus governance, preparing them for leadership roles beyond AUN.
Current SGA President Mohammad Bashir Zakari highlighted the long-term vision behind the project, stressing the hut's role in sustaining continuity and promoting student-centered leadership. “The SGA Hut represents our dedication to listening to students and addressing their needs effectively. What we built today is the foundation for what we will build tomorrow,” he said.
Zakari also expressed appreciation to those who supported his leadership journey, especially the Dean of Students, Mr. Sesugh, whose campus tour inspired the idea, and to past SGA presidents whose guidance has been invaluable.
Students at the launch described the hut as a timely development that will enhance communication and strengthen their sense of belonging. Many expressed optimisms that a permanent, visible SGA presence will encourage greater participation in student affairs.
The ceremony concluded with a tour of the facility and a visit to the newly constructed bridge near the student business area. In a symbolic gesture, items including an old SGA phone, the AUN President’s crest, goodwill letters, and personal memorabilia were sealed inside a brick safe, scheduled to be opened in ten years.
