While the world outside exchanged roses and boxes of chocolate, the American University of Nigeria (AUN) campus was alive with a different kind of passion on February 14. The thunder of football boots on the 5-a-side pitch drowned out the typical sounds of romance as six tertiary institutions faced off in a groundbreaking women’s football tournament.
A collaborative effort between the Shellers Football League and AUN, the one-day spectacle brought together female athletes from across Yola, transforming the pitch into a cauldron of competition and camaraderie. The Federal College of Education Yola, Adamawa State School of Nursing Sciences, Adamawa State Polytechnic, Adamawa State School of Legal Studies, and AUN’s own Red and Blue Stallions were among the teams featured in the tournament. On a day traditionally reserved for lovers, these athletes found romance in teamwork, tactical battles, and the opportunity to showcase their immense talent.
After a grueling series of matches, the stage was set for a final that would require more than regular time to decide a winner. The AUN Blue Stallions locked horns with a resilient Adamawa State School of Nursing Sciences in a tense title decider. Regulation time ended 1–1, and the championship was ultimately decided from the penalty spot, where the School of Nursing held their nerve to secure a 4–2 victory.
Following the trophy presentation, the victorious coach of Adamawa State School of Nursing Sciences, Mr. Dahiru Mahmud, praised the standard of officiating and the overall organization. “I truly appreciate the officiating crew; they were fair, and I feel honored to be named best coach of the tournament,” Mahmud said.
The tournament’s Most Valuable Player, Ms. Faith Martin of the School of Nursing Sciences, expressed her delight at the platform provided. “I feel honored today; these are events where we can showcase our skills and talent. Thanks to AUN for the warm environment, and to Shellers, we look forward to more of this,” she stated.
The tournament highlighted not only the talent and determination of these young athletes but also AUN’s commitment to women’s empowerment and holistic student development. On a day dedicated to love, it was passion for the game that stole the spotlight in Yola.
