Accounting and Finance
The Department of Accounting and Finance is committed to developing highly competent professionals equipped with the knowledge, skills, and ethical foundation required to thrive in today’s complex and dynamic business environment. Rooted in the vision of a Development University, the department integrates both accounting and finance disciplines to cultivate analytical thinking, professional competence, and innovation. Through a balanced blend of theoretical and practical learning, students are empowered to build self-confidence, become self-reliant, and demonstrate accountability in areas such as financial reporting, auditing, taxation, corporate finance, and investment analysis.
The department aims to prepare graduates with strong critical, analytical, and problem-solving skills for effective decision-making in both accounting and financial contexts. Emphasis is placed on ethical reasoning, technological competence, and the application of modern tools such as accounting information systems and financial analytics. Students are also equipped for lifelong learning, professional development, and global relevance, with an understanding of emerging markets, regulatory frameworks, and the challenges of financial governance and accountability, particularly within Africa. Supported by a solid foundation in liberal arts, mathematics, and the sciences, graduates are prepared to communicate effectively, adapt to change, and contribute meaningfully to sustainable economic development.
ProgramsFaculty in the Department of Accounting and Finance are actively engaged in impactful, policy-relevant, and globally informed research that reflects the evolving demands of modern financial systems and business environments. Their work spans critical areas such as cybersecurity in financial services, intellectual capital and firm valuation, corporate governance, financial reporting quality, and the performance of financial institutions and non-financial firms. This research demonstrates a strong commitment to addressing contemporary challenges—ranging from digital financial risks and technological transformation to transparency, accountability, and value creation in emerging markets, particularly within Nigeria and the broader African context.
In addition, faculty research explores public sector accountability, including budgeting practices and service delivery in government institutions, as well as socio-economic issues such as poverty, inequality, and the impact of population growth on development. These contributions highlight a multidisciplinary approach that integrates accounting, finance, governance, and development studies. As active scholars and practitioners, faculty members bring both academic rigor and industry insight into their work. Many hold professional certifications and are members—and in some cases leaders—of recognized accounting and finance bodies, reinforcing their commitment to ethical standards, continuous professional development, and thought leadership in the discipline.
