SUMMARY OF POSITION:
The Assistant Professor of English Language/Linguistics/Language Education will be responsible for teaching, research and community service as may be requested by the Dean. The candidate contributes to preparing students to be applied, critical thinkers and problem solvers through innovative teaching and research. S/he will work closely with the Chair and Dean of the school in formulating and implementing course structures that would translate to effective teaching and learning of courses in line with the development philosophy of the American University of Nigeria. Asides the teaching responsibilities, the successful candidate is also expected to contribute to the department’s administration and scholarly work by carrying out and disseminating high quality research.
DETAILED LISTING OF RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Teaching: The primary responsibility of a faculty member is teaching and supporting students through problem-centred learning.
- Research: Faculty members are expected to undertake research in relevant areas of expertise and in line with university mission.
- Community Service: Faculty are to contribute to AUN community service and development activities
- Class Attendance: Faculty members should make clear that students are expected to attend class and complete required assignments.
- Academic Advising: Faculty members must be available to assist students throughout the semester and maintain stipulated student office hours.
- Department/Schools Meetings: Attending meetings on a regular basis and as necessary to facilitate communication and to accomplish the work required for the smooth operation of the department and school.
- Attendance at Academic Functions: Full-time faculty members are expected to attend meetings of the faculty and any all-college meetings called by AUN administration.
Requirements for the position:
- PhD in English Language or Linguistics.
- Experience in American Style of higher education.
- Experience of teaching at both undergraduate and graduate levels, with at least two (2) to five (5) years’ experiences at university level education.
- An outstanding teaching and research record commensurate with career stage.
- Experience in problem centered approach to teaching and learning.
- Record of publication in peer-reviewed journals commensurate with career stage.
Other requirements, abilities for the position:
- Experience of working in Africa.
- Experience of curriculum development.
- Experience of organizing conferences and workshops.
- Experience of developing research proposals for externally funded projects.
