On Saturday, October 19, 2024, the American University of Nigeria (AUN) campus was abuzz with excitement as the children of faculty and staff gathered at Commencement Hall for a lively, fun-filled event organized by the President’s Office. In an effort to appreciate the essential role families play within the AUN community, the event created a space for the youngest members of the AUN family to connect, play, and make lasting memories.

The event welcomed children between the ages of 5 and 12, with activities carefully curated to ensure they had a day packed with joy and entertainment. This special occasion was more than just a day of play—it was a celebration of the AUN family and a gesture of appreciation to employees who dedicate their time and effort to furthering the institution's mission.

The President’s Vision for Community and Inclusion

In sharing his vision for the event, President Dewayne Frazier reflected on the motivation and objectives behind organizing this day of fun: "If we want AUN to be the best it can be, we need to include all our stakeholders, and that includes families. The families of AUN make countless sacrifices for their loved ones to work here, and having something special for the children of faculty and staff is a small way to thank them. Our faculty and staff work tirelessly, and they rely on the love and support of their families. This event is one way to recognize that and honor them."

The event is part of a broader goal at AUN to foster an inclusive and supportive work environment. By showing appreciation to employees’ families, the university seeks to strengthen the bonds that make AUN a place where people are not only willing to work but proud to be a part of. President Dewayne Frazier emphasized that the key goal was to “create a space where families could come together, relax, and have fun,” and noted that he always enjoys seeing the smiles on children’s faces, as it "helps brighten any day."

Activities and Highlights of the Day

The event featured an engaging lineup planned by a dedicated team led by all the President’s Men (and Women). Leading the organization were Mr. Raymond Obindu, Ms. Martina Achoda and Ms. Bwamakuli Fwa, with support from Dean of Student Affairs Mr. Sesugh Annger, and Deputy Director of Human Resources, Ms. Monica Adama. Ten distinct stations were organized to provide children with a range of activities, from athletic challenges to creative fun. A highlight of the day was the "President's Magic and Lollipops" session, where the President himself led children through a series of magical acts, bringing an air of wonder and excitement.

The sports stations were a big hit, with children showcasing their skills in basketball and soccer. Traditional games like the egg race and musical chairs brought a sense of friendly competition and laughter, while an art station allowed kids to explore their creativity through painting and drawing, with many taking home their creations as souvenirs. The event culminated in a lively dance-off, with winners awarded exciting prizes like a USA soccer ball, a Black Panther action figure, toy cars, and a guitar.

The event, which distributed tickets on a first-come, first-served basis, saw overwhelming demand, with tickets claimed within two hours. This response has inspired the President and organizers to consider making this a recurring event, allowing more families to participate in the future.

Fostering a Stronger Sense of Community at AUN

Beyond the entertainment and excitement, this event represents a meaningful step in fostering a supportive, engaged, and cohesive community at AUN. As part of AUN's strategic plan, the university is committed to investing not only in the professional development and training of its employees but also in their well-being and happiness.

President Dewayne Frazier noted, “This event is perfectly aligned with our strategic plan. We are committed to investing in our people – through salaries, professional development, additional training, and enjoyable events like this one. Building a community where everyone feels valued is essential to AUN’s growth and success. By caring for those who support our students, we ensure AUN continues to thrive.”

This commitment to people-centered initiatives, whether through family events or professional growth opportunities, contributes to a culture of loyalty, pride, and mutual respect within the AUN community. By recognizing and celebrating the families who provide invaluable support to AUN’s faculty and staff, the university reaffirms its dedication to the well-being of the entire AUN community.

The AUN family day was a resounding success, bringing joy to employees and their children and creating cherished memories. It marked the beginning of what is hoped to be an annual tradition—one that acknowledges the contributions of AUN families and brings together those who make the institution a thriving center of education and community.

As laughter and music filled the air, it was clear that AUN is more than just a workplace—it’s a community where people connect in an atmosphere of love and service.
