A Spectacle of Glamour, Style, and Culture as AUN Celebrates Nigeria @ 64

Memories continue to resonate around the celebration of Nigeria’s 64th Independence Day by AUN students on September 28, 2024. In the Commencement Hall, the scene was truly memorable; the sight, sound and colors truly fascinating, as enthusiastic students showcasing elegance and swagger waved the national flag, proudly projecting the indefatigable Nigerian spirit. It has become an AUN tradition that students proudly display the vibrant and diverse cultural heritage of the Nigerian people during the Independence anniversary. This year's event was no different. The Commencement Hall brimmed with people celebrating Nigeria's freedom under the theme "Shakara."

The contagious effect of patriotism was evident in the traditional attire from different regions, each representing what is unique about Nigeria’s culture. In honor of the nation and her past heroes, these fabrics, a symbol of unity and diversity, converged at AUN, inspiring the celebrated aspiration for freedom.

As the drums rumbled, flutes lilted and trumpets blared, students danced to the melody and reflected deep on the excitement and challenges of being born in the country destined to lead the Black Nation to greater heights.

The celebration was a vibrant mix of activities, including a cultural parade, music, and poetry performances by students from various clubs, like the literary club. These activities, each a unique expression of Nigerian culture, captivated the minds of everyone present in the hall.

Highlights of the activities include a poem recitation, a drama performance, and a cultural display, all of which revolve around Nigerian people and cultures. The crowd was thrilled by performances such as a drama by the AUN Theater Club, titled Forbidden Unions, cultural parades by the Kanuri students group and a group of students representing the Yola Emirate Council, a poem recitation by Ubaidatu Hamman Tukur Yetisuri, titled Shakara Showdown, and music performances by a few Nigerian music stars, such as Fireboy's Every Day, Qing Madi's Ole, and Wande Coal's Again, by Anayat.

Chatting with our correspondence, Mr. Sesugh Annger, Associate Dean of Students Affairs, said the Independence Day celebration was a huge event that draws people from different cultures around the AUN community together. Students love it. They always dress up to celebrate their culture and Nigeria.
