In a groundbreaking move, the American University of Nigeria (AUN) launched a major green energy initiative on October 11, 2024, at the e-Library, signaling its strong commitment to environmental sustainability and innovation. At the event witnessed by senior management staff, members of the University Senate, the Student Government Association (SGA) and Students Sustainability Clubs, President DeWayne Frazier switched on the solar system for the Robert Pastor e-library and Resource Center.
The initiative highlights the university's commitment to renewable energy solutions, particularly during Nigeria's acute energy crisis. It marks a new era for the American University of Nigeria, with the library, a hub for learning and research, securing constant power. President Frazier stated that electrifying the library is just the start, as the student dormitories will also transition to solar power soon.
AUN's focus on green energy stands as a proactive response to Nigeria's energy challenges. During the dedication ceremony, President DeWayne Frazier emphasized the importance of embracing sustainable solutions, not only for the university but also as a model for the nation. "Nigeria stands at a crucial juncture," he declared. While we are rich in natural resources, our energy infrastructure continues to falter. At AUN, we are committed to demonstrating that sustainable, renewable energy is the path forward."
The new green energy initiative involves the installation of solar power systems across the university campus. This initiative aligns with AUN's vision to reduce its carbon footprint while ensuring a more reliable and sustainable energy supply. Furthermore, it reflects the university's core values of social responsibility and innovation, aiming to educate students and the local community about the significance of renewable energy.
Dean of the AUN School of Engineering, whose school is leading the university’s renewable energy initiative, Professor Abubakar Sadiq Hussaini stated, "We are not only committed to academic excellence but also to leading the way in sustainable practices. AUN's green energy initiative is just one of many steps we are taking to ensure a better future for our students and our nation."
