As AUN Observes Zero Discrimination Day, Professors Offer Philosophical, Legal Perspectives

The 2020 International Zero Discrimination Day on March 1 provided another opportunity for AUN Community members to reflect on the observance of national and global laws and practices that promote human progress.

As a vibrant academic and social community that thrives on the resourcefulness of its diversity, AUN is eminently suited to take a lead in this annual event.

Originally set aside by the United Nations AIDS Committee (UNAIDS) to draw attention to the legal and social stigmatization of HIV/AIDS victims and the need to end discrimination against such persons the Zero Discrimination Day now encompasses laws and policies, especially in the workplace ensuring protection of Minority groups and engendering a culture of inclusiveness.

To mark this year's event, Executive Director of UNAIDS, Michel Sidibe enjoined countries to "carefully examine their laws and policies in order to ensure equality and protection for all people, without exception".

Assistant Vice President of Human Resources, Nourah Bamalli attested to AUN's compliance with the principles and values of non-discrimination.

"AUN is an equal opportunity employer and gives all employees equal employment and career growth opportunity regardless of race, color, religion, sex, age, national origin, or disability."

AUN prohibits discrimination on any basis prohibited by Nigerian law and prohibits retaliation resulting from making a complaint, assisting in an investigation, opposing discrimination, or otherwise exercising rights protected by applicable law.

Professors William 'Bill' Hansen and Jennifer Mike also offered deeply insightful analyses on the philosophical and legal dimensions of discrimination/zero discrimination to further enrich.
