AUN Academy Science Fair 2022: Grooming the Next Generation of Scientists, Inventors

The senior students of the AUN Academy were all decked out in their white laboratory coats, and they looked like modern-day Thomas Edison as they took the stage of the fully packed AUN Community Hall for their science exhibitions and presentations. It was another Science Fair Day on Friday, March 11, 2022, and the hall was buzzing with curious students, staff, parents, and guests.

This year's Academy Science Fair Day featured a powerful theme: Alternative and Sustainable Energy. In her opening remarks, the school's Vice-Principal Academics, Mrs. Victoria Ameh, highlighted the need to address contemporary issues.

"The theme of the Fair is timely, considering the energy crisis in Nigeria. It is past time to figure out what alternative energies we can use to solve our energy concerns in the country."

The Science Fair Day is one of the many platforms for developing students' inherent potential, confidence, creativity, and talents towards scientific innovations, innovations that will address fundamental problems and construct tomorrow's inventions. Students work fervently, both individually and as teams, towards their projects and inventions. They aim to create innovative methods and tools that will be useful, effective, and sustainable.

The highlight of the event featured displays of inventions. Ibrahim Mohammed built an impressive prototype of cooking gas. The construction was made of small quantities of petrol and water held in separate airtight containers to produce gas. Another student, Divine Hanatu Musa, explained in her presentation the different methods of food preservation using either the sun or hot water to produce durable canned tomatoes. There were also exhibitions of smartly constructed energy-conserving light bulbs and water fountains.

However, the day was not only for inventions. The students also proved well-rounded as they demonstrated proficient health and safety responses. This includes administering first aid and performing Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) in cases of emergencies.

Students from the Air Force Comprehensive School, Saint Mary's Secondary School, and the Federal Government Girls College Yola also graced the event in their impeccable uniforms.

The Air Force Comprehensive locked horns with FGGC in a quiz competition as part of the event. The audience cheered them on as both teams fielded physics, Chemistry, and biology questions.

In the end, gift items were presented to all participants and winning teams. "It is definitely a job well done," remarked Ibrahim Maiwuya, the senior prefect of the AUN Academy.
