AUN Consolidates Lead in Fight Against Illicit Drugs, as Students, NDLEA Launch Anti-Drug Club

It is on record that the AUN Campus is a strictly policed no-drug zone and those found using or dealing in drugs face harsh disciplinary penalties. The University's well-earned reputation received a further boost on November 4, 2022, with the inauguration of a drug-sensitization student organization. Initiated by students with the support of the Student Affairs Division, the War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) will bring together student anti-drug activists to educate students on the dangers of drug abuse.

Vice-President for Campus Life and Dean of Students, Mr. Byron Bullock described the launch as a special day for AUN students who came together to take the privilege and honor to embark on an anti-drug campaign voluntarily and without any coercion from any quarters.

"We are also fortunate today to witness the formation of this organization with the express purpose of combating drug abuse in our community. WADA is an organization formed by a group of interested students who have come together to confront the menace of drugs in our society beginning with a sensitization campaign from our campus. They have joined forces with the AUN Safety and Security Department, the Judicial Affairs and Psychology Units, and the local National Law Drug Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) to combat drug abuse but to also to provide the necessary education on the impact of drug use on individuals, with the hope of discouraging its use.

"The work will be critical and consistent, and we vow to provide the necessary support and encouragement in order to achieve these tasks," he said.

Mr. Byron thanked Barr. Mbursa Gwary, Director of the Judicial Affairs Department for his guidance and support in actualizing this initiative. He also thanked the representatives of NDLEA for their partnership and assistance in making this organization on camps a reality and appreciated the seriousness and commitment and the information they will be provided subsequently to make the WADA organization successful.

The Adamawa State NDLEA Commander, Mr. Femi S. Agboalu lamented the indiscriminate consumption of non-prescribed pharmaceutical drugs in society which he said has destroyed a lot of youths, stating that it is the catalyst behind all heinous criminalities being perpetrated in the country and around the world.

WADA's pioneer executive members sworn-in include: Abubakar, Software Engineering major President, Madu Tabitha, Information System major as Vice-President, Maryam Mustapha, CMD major as Secretary, Yolanda Amos, Software Engineering as Asst. Secretary, and Jamila Oyiza Usman, Info System major as Publicity Secretary.
