On October 18, 2024, the American University of Nigeria Honor Society (AUNHS) and the AUN Girl Child Foundation Club organized an important outreach program at Government Girls Secondary School in Yola. The event focused on educating students about personal hygiene and menstrual health—topics that are often overlooked in traditional schooling.
Hosted by Ms. Sharon Pedro-Dimas, a law student Senior and Vice President of AUNHS, the program aimed to fill the knowledge gap for young girls. She emphasized the importance of understanding personal hygiene and menstrual health.
Mr. Kingsley Nwankwor, a junior Chemical Engineering student and Vice President of the Girl Child Foundation Club, spoke to the girls about self-worth and empowerment, encouraging them to recognize their unique value and to pursue their dreams. He linked this message to the significance of personal hygiene for overall well-being.
The discussions also addressed critical issues like sex education, cyberbullying, insecurity, and sexual harassment, empowering the girls to make informed choices and build resilience.
Mr. Mohammed Danjuma Garba, the Vice Principal for Special Duties at the school, expressed his gratitude, noting how challenging it can be to discuss sensitive topics like menstrual health in class. He appreciated the valuable resources provided during the outreach.
Head Girl Ms. Amina Buba Maiha also praised the initiative for creating a supportive environment where students could ask questions and learn about personal hygiene, menstrual health, and self-esteem.
