The American University of Nigeria has reaffirmed its commitment to institutional excellence with a powerful two-day refresher training for administrative staff and professional cadres, held August 11–12, 2025, at the 24-Hour Library.
Designed to prepare staff for the Fall Academic Session, the sessions focused on leadership continuity, emotional intelligence, effective supervision, and the growth mindset essential for a dynamic academic environment.
One of the most compelling moments came from Vice-President of Administration and Registrar, Mr. Daniel Okereke, whose presentation on “Succession Plan and Institutional Sustainability” underscored the urgency of preparing future leaders. His message was clear: without deliberate planning, even strong institutions risk losing momentum.
Vice-President, Finance, Nnenna Mosugu, offered a thought-provoking session on “Emotional Intelligence”, reminding participants that the way they understand and manage emotions often determines success more than technical skill alone.
Dean of the School of Business and Entrepreneurship, Dr. Yusuf Ahmed Kani, inspired the audience with “Growth Mindset at Work: Embracing Learning and Development”, urging participants to treat challenges as opportunities to improve.
In her presentation, Assistant Vice-President, HR, Hajia Faizatu Ahmed, took participants through “Accountability and Ownership at Workplace”, driving home the need for personal responsibility and professional integrity as the foundation of AUN’s culture.
Equally transformative was the presentation by HR Director, Mustapha Abubakar, whose talk on “Effective Supervision” broke down the art of managing people into clear, actionable strategies—communication, mentorship, and performance monitoring—that empower teams to deliver their best.
Adding further depth to the program, Event Director, Mr. Usoh, delivered an engaging presentation on AUN’s core values of excellence, integrity, and service, showing how they guide decisions across the University. University Psychologist, Mr. Babalola Olajubu, addressed “Work-Life Balance”, emphasizing boundaries and well-being for sustained productivity. Assistant Director, HR, Madam Monica Adama, in her session “You Matter Here: The Role of Belonging and Contribution in Team Engagement”, stressed that inclusion and recognition are vital for motivation and job satisfaction.
A cross-section of participants praised the initiative, noting that the training had given them practical tools they could start applying immediately. They stated that the workshop was “not loaded with theory but a practical on how to work better as a team and contribute to AUN’s long-term success.”
By the close of the event, participants left with not just renewed skills, but a sharper sense of purpose and alignment with AUN’s mission.
