Fall 2024 Freshmen experienced their first taste of community engagement when they repainted one of the blocks of the Rumde Jabbi Primary School, Mbamba, Yola. Freshmen, volunteer students, and staff, under the guidance of the Office of Community Service, attended the event on Saturday, August 31, 2024.

The freshmen, clad in green and white T-shirts, joyfully participated in not just painting the walls but also in the commitment to serve humanity. The event marks their first step towards a sense of civic engagement, a value that AUN instills in its students, which will become a part of their weekly routine.

The Vice President for Campus Life and Dean of Student Affairs, Mr. Byron Bullock, said that the essence of community service is to train and develop students to make them responsible to their community and also participate in some development work. We must establish connections with individuals, enabling them to return to their communities after graduation and create a significant influence.

The students enjoyed their project participation because it was new for some. Ediomo Akpabio, who is studying telecommunication engineering, said that community service helped him realize the importance of being kind and generous. "Giving back to the community is one thing that people see. AUN is doing a great job of letting us see the condition of other people and how to help them."

The head teacher of the school, Mrs. Zainab Isa, also expressed her appreciation to AUN students for repainting the classrooms and the continuous support they get from AUN.
