In a remarkable act of compassion, leadership, and community service, Jordan Onyia, a junior majoring in Computer Science at the American University of Nigeria (AUN), has transformed the lives of 70 out-of-school children. His initiative was designed to return them to the classroom.
The event, held on April 15 at the AUN students’ residence, brought together parents, children, and well-wishers. More than an outreach activity, it was a life-changing intervention that restored hope and opportunity for dozens of young learners.
Driven by a desire to give every child a chance at education, Jordan provided each beneficiary with a school bag packed with books and writing materials. This ensured they were ready to resume learning with confidence and dignity.
Hassan Mohammed, whose child was among the beneficiaries, reflected on the wider significance of the initiative, saying: “If all of AUN and the community could adopt this spirit by looking after the poor with compassion, there would be no out-of-school children anymore.”
Speaking on the inspiration behind the initiative, Jordan said: “I am privileged, and giving that motivation to others is my utmost concern. I may have spent more than ₦400,000 to support all 70 pupils, but everyone deserves the opportunity to go to school.”
Ms. Rabi Abubakar, Coordinator of Community Service, praised Jordan’s extraordinary commitment and sense of responsibility. “Jordan has done a lot. The amount he invested in the lives of these pupils is remarkable, but one thing I am sure of is that when you give, it comes back to you directly,” she said.
Jordan’s initiative embodies the American University of Nigeria’s mission: producing the next generation of leaders equipped to address the challenges facing their communities. Through service-driven learning and a liberal arts education, AUN continues to empower students to translate knowledge into meaningful social impact.
