AUN Women's Leadership Council backs women inclusion at all levels

The Women's Leadership Council (WLC) came together on March 8, 2024, at the Security Hall Admin I to celebrate International Women's Day, honoring the achievements and contributions of women around the world. The event recognizes the progress made toward gender equality and to inspire further action for the empowerment of women.

The President of WLC club, Faith Emmanuela Idorenyin Akpan, in her opening speech states the importance of gender equality and the role of women in shaping a more inclusive society. “I used to avoid doing certain things because I was concerned about what people would say, but I was raised by a woman who impacted my life with strength, intelligence, and fearlessness to never allow people to validate me or take advantage of me right from primary school. I now understand that as a woman, I am strong, brave, and meant to lead.”

The event's guest speaker, Haj. Maryam Mohammed Korau, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of MK Unique Collection, praised the progress made toward achieving gender equality and discussed some societal challenges and areas that still need to be addressed, saying, "When we talk about gender equality, it is that everyone should be treated with respect despite gender differences." She added. She advised women to believe in themselves and participate in business and other sectors to have an impact. She concluded her speech by emphasizing the importance of digital literacy and education in empowering women and promoting gender equality across various sectors.

Reflecting on the significance of the occasion, Mrs. Emillienne Akpan Idorenyin, Director of the AUN Writing Center, emphasized the need for sustained efforts in advancing not just women’s rights but human rights even in the work environment. “It’s our responsibility to set boundaries and ensure people we work with know we respect them but will not compromise on our rights”.
