“Embrace each day with Courage, You Are More Than Your Diagnosis”

The American Space, in collaboration with the Medical Women Association, Adamawa Chapter, on February, 4, 2025, commemorated the World Cancer Day, by bringing together the AUN community and residents from neighboring areas to create awareness on cancer diagnosis. The event raised awareness about various types of cancer, their causes, and preventive measures.

Dr. Maisaratu A. Bakari, a Senior Lecturer and Honorary Consultant at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Modibbo Adama University Teaching Hospital, said the global impact of gynecological cancer. She noted that it remains one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths in women worldwide. Stressing the role of Human Papillomavirus (HPV) as a major risk factor, she advised young girls to avoid early sexual activity as it can be transmitted sexually and encouraged all women to be vaccinated against HPV. "If you are a victim, know that you are strong, resilient, and never alone in this fight. Your journey may be challenging, but every step forward is a victory. With hope, support, and the right care, you can overcome, you are more than your diagnosis," she said.

Dr. Wasinda S. Bulus, a Pediatrician Consultant at Modibo Adama Teaching Hospital, emphasized that childhood cancer is a broad category affecting not only the child but also the entire family. She highlighted genetic mutation, ethnicity, environmental factors, and infections as possible causes. She encouraged early detection, stating, "If cancer is diagnosed at an early stage, it can be cured."

Dr. Hadiza Mohammed urged women to limit the excessive use of contraceptive pills, practice regular breast self-examinations, and seek medical attention if they notice any abnormalities in their bodies.

Director, Window on America, Ms. Stella Udeogu, who hosted the event encouraged participants to spread awareness beyond the event, emphasizing that cancer education is not just about learning but about saving lives. "You never know who you might be helping by sharing this knowledge," she said.

People are advised to remember the importance of early detection, preventive measures, and the power of community support in the fight against cancer.
