Newly admitted students of the American University of Nigeria (AUN) were urged to take ownership of their academic journey and campus life as the Dean of Student Affairs, Mr. Sesugh Annger, delivered a compelling address at the 2026 Pledge Ceremony on January 26.
Mr. Annger reminded the freshmen that meaningful growth often emerges from challenge. He emphasized that “even the roughest wind makes trees grow strong roots,” explaining that while AUN’s academic environment is demanding, its rigor would ultimately strengthen their intellect, resilience, and capacity for leadership.
Offering practical guidance, the Dean encouraged the new Stallions to take responsibility for their learning by attending classes early, sitting at the front, and actively participating in discussions, habits he described as fundamental gateways to knowledge. He also highlighted the importance of holistic development, urging students to engage fully in campus life through bodies like the Campus Activities Board. In today’s global arena, he noted, international organizations value demonstrable skills and meaningful contributions as much as academic certificates.
Striking a reflective tone, Mr. Annger advised students to remain grounded in their origins while striving toward the future. “No matter how hot water becomes,” he observed, “it never forgets that it was once cold.” He urged them to stay humble, focused, and connected to their core values. Expressing confidence in their potential, he challenged them to make a difference, assuring them that the capacity to do so already resided within.
The Dean further emphasized that a fulfilling university experience is built through connection. He encouraged students to build friendships, form networks, and avoid isolation, pointing to the Student Government Association (SGA), the Honor Society, and volunteer groups as key pathways for leadership and service.
