The Entrepreneurship and Leadership Society, ELS, one of the most active student clubs on campus, hosted its first movie night on Sunday, October 9, 2022. The movie, 'The Wolf of Wall Street" was screened inside the Library Auditorium from 8 pm to 10 pm.
The Wolf of Wall Street was directed by the famous Martin Scorsese and released in December 2013. It features the turbulent life of a Wall Street stockbroker (acted by Leonardo DiCaprio). After taking a hit, Jordan Belfort (DiCaprio) founded and built-up a fraudulent partnership with Donnie Azoff (acted by Jonah Hill) with unexpected consequences. The movie has an interesting plot revolving around lessons on money management, finances, partnerships, and business ethics; all of which feature prominently on the ELS agenda. There are also some hard lessons in life generally, about the ups and downs of the fast life, the limits of human greed, and the aftertaste of corporate corruption. Students must have learned a thing or two from the movie. The movie also boasts some memorable quotes that resonated with the students, the favorites being: "if you want to be rich, never give up" and "there is no nobility in poverty", as well as one quote to twinkle an eye: "you don't choose who you fall in love with, do you?" (wink! wink!)
Mr. Chuka-Utazi Obumneme, President of ELS, described his club as focused on helping students develop a passion for entrepreneurship and self-development as well as a strong commitment and desire for leadership and service to humanity. "ELS provides an enabling environment that supports students with material and learning resources that will help to develop or complement their entrepreneurial skills through entrepreneurship seminars and workshops, leadership sessions and inspirational talks."
Mr. Daramfon Mfon Ekpo, a second-year Entrepreneurship Management Student, described the event as really nice and enjoyable. "I think the message was passed but the Auditorium was a bit too warm for me".
Ms. Chidere Enwerem, an Information Systems Student, said the movie was too long and she could not finish watching it the first time hence the decision to watch it again. And the refreshment was okay, she added.
I gathered that the movie was a popular choice for most students who voted for its screening. The turnout was impressive too and light refreshments were served to everyone who showed up
