“Investing in preventive care is more effective and less costly,” says AUN President DeWayne Frazier at university’s two-day Health Awareness Program

The American University of Nigeria has reaffirmed its commitment to employee wellness through a two-day Health Awareness Program organized by the university’s Human Resources Department at the School of Law Auditorium from May 6–7, 2026.

The initiative, which focused on preventive healthcare, health screening, and treatment, brought together medical specialists from the Modibbo Adama University Teaching Hospital alongside AUN health professionals to educate staff members on critical health issues and encourage healthier lifestyles.

Speaking at the opening session, AUN President Prof. DeWayne Frazier underscored the importance of proactive healthcare and personal wellness. He noted that investing in preventive care remains more effective and less costly than treating advanced illness, while encouraging staff to take full advantage of the program’s educational and medical services.

The first presentation was delivered by consultant physician and cardiologist Vandi Zira Ghyi, who spoke extensively on cardiovascular health. He identified hypertension, unhealthy dietary habits, physical inactivity, and stress as major contributors to heart disease and emphasized the role of routine exercise, balanced nutrition, and regular medical checkups in reducing cardiovascular risks.

Consultant physician and gastroenterologist Dr. Solomon Mourice led a session on liver health, with particular attention to hepatitis infections. He explained the different forms of hepatitis ,  A, B, C, D, and E ,  highlighting their causes, symptoms, treatment options, and preventive measures, including proper hygiene practices and vaccination.

Participants were also lectured on cancer awareness from obstetrician and gynaecologist Dr. Anthony Yakubu, who discussed prostate, breast, and cervical cancers. He stressed the importance of early detection through regular screening and timely medical intervention, noting that increased awareness remains essential in improving survival outcomes.

Other facilitators included Dr. George Ani, a public health physician and epidemiologist, as well as endocrinologist Dr.Tonde Elijah,, who contributed expert perspectives on preventive healthcare and chronic disease management.

The Health Awareness Program forms part of AUN’s broader institutional commitment to fostering a healthy and productive workforce by equipping employees with the knowledge and resources needed to make informed health decisions.
