AUN is set to introduce PhD, LL.M., and PGD programs in Law, as well as PhD and MSc programs in Economics, following resource verification by the National Universities Commission (NUC).
A resource verification team from the Commission concluded an official visit to the American University of Nigeria (AUN) on 16 February 2026. During the visit, the team assessed proposed graduate programs in the School of Law (PGD, LL.M., and PhD in Law) and the School of Arts & Sciences (MSc and PhD in Economics). Senior academics appointed by the Commission, including Prof. Yusuf Yusuf of the University of Maiduguri and Prof. Ahmed El-Yakub of the University of Abuja, led the assessment and supervised the evaluation of the Law programs.
The team conducted an on-site review of facilities, academic resources, staffing, and program delivery. They also engaged with university management, faculty, and staff to assess compliance with national academic standards. Members of the delegation expressed positive impressions of AUN’s academic infrastructure, noting in particular the postgraduate law library, seminar rooms, and the strength of faculty supporting the proposed programs.
This development holds regional significance, as it positions AUN to become the second university in Nigeria’s Northeast to offer graduate law programs once approval is granted, thereby expanding access to advanced legal education in the region.
Speaking at the close of the visit, AUN President Dewayne Frazier expressed appreciation for the thorough assessment. “We are grateful for this visit and the constructive observations provided by the NUC team,” he said. “The recommendations offered will further strengthen our academic programs and institutional processes.”
He assured the team that the university administration would carefully review the feedback and implement necessary adjustments. “We remain committed to maintaining excellence and ensuring that our programs meet and exceed national and global standards. We will make the required adjustments to align fully with the Commission’s recommendations,” he added.
The team, led by Prof. Yusuf, commended the university’s learning environment and adherence to quality assurance procedures while also identifying specific areas for enhancement to improve program delivery and student experience.
With the verification process now complete, the university awaits the Commission’s final decision. AUN management has reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining high academic standards and fostering innovation in teaching, research, and community engagement, reinforcing public confidence in the quality of graduate education it offers.
