The American University of Nigeria (AUN) commemorated its 16th Annual Founder’s Day and 20th Anniversary held on 30th November 2024 with an inspiring keynote address by His Excellency Peter Obi, CON. Speaking on leadership and national development, Obi emphasized the transformative power of education and the urgent need for visionary leadership in Nigeria.
During the event, Obi praised AUN’s founder, His Excellency Atiku Abubakar, for his foresight and commitment to creating an institution dedicated to nurturing future leaders. He noted the pressing leadership challenges facing Nigeria, drawing on economic data that illustrated the nation’s declining GDP and per capita income in stark contrast to the robust growth experienced by countries such as Indonesia, India, Vietnam, and the Philippines from 2014 to 2024.
“There is an urgent need to embrace meritocracy, competence, and measurable development metrics,” Obi urged, calling on young leaders to transcend tribalism and religious divisions. He championed a results-oriented approach to governance, positioning it as essential for restoring Nigeria’s standing on the global stage.
As part of the anniversary celebrations, AUN honored exceptional staff members for their contributions to the university’s mission. President Dewayne Frazier presented awards to individuals exemplifying dedication and excellence, aligning with Obi’s call for merit-based recognition.
Among the honorees were Zubairu Mohammed, who was celebrated for his financial management skills; Mrs. Habiba Jumo, who was recognized for her academic and administrative excellence; and Jessica James, who was acknowledged for her commitment to campus safety. Other award recipients included Babalola Olajubu, Idris Isa, Sunday Ogbona, and Precious, who were all commended for their outstanding service.
The ceremony also underscored AUN’s commitment to human development, particularly in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). The university initiated its first STEM competition for secondary schools in Adamawa State, aiming to inspire students to pursue careers in these vital areas.
Winners of the competition included Restoration High School in first place, Concordia College in second, and Airforce Comprehensive School, Yola, in third. Mr. Dan Okereke, Vice President Administrative/Registrar, announced plans to institutionalize the STEM competition as an annual event, further reinforcing AUN’s educational impact in the region.
Peter Obi’s keynote address resonated deeply with the Founder’s Day theme, encouraging the AUN community to embrace competence, inclusivity, and innovation principles. The celebration of outstanding staff highlighted that merit and dedication are essential for sustainable development.
