AUN School of Law's Assistant Prof., Dr. Jennifer Mike, was at a 2-day conference on implementing domestic impact decisions of the African Court of Humans and People in June 2024 in Arusha, United Republic of Tanzania. The conference was organized by the Centre for Human Rights, the University of Pretoria, in conjunction with the Coalition for an Effective African Court and the participation of the African Court on Human and Peoples' Rights (the Court), with the support of the Open Society Foundations, GIZ, and Raoul Wallenberg Institute.
The conference, which considered numerous legal issues affecting the continent, was attended by more than 80 participants, representing the African Court, African Union (AU) Member States, the Pan-African Parliament, the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights, the African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child, Network of National Human Rights Institutions, the Academia, and the civil society.
At the conference, Dr. Jennifer presented a paper titled "The Challenges in implementing the decisions of the African Court concerning socio-economic and cultural rights." The paper delved into the critical significance of enforcing the decisions made by the African Court regarding social, economic, and cultural rights. The rights encompass health, water, food, shelter, and work. The paper also advocates for implementing human rights decisions across the African continent.
Dr. Jennifer described her presentation at the conference as fulfilling. "It was a privilege to present before Judges of the African Court, State Delegates, Diplomats, Academics, and Chief Security Officers and receive feedback from them, "she stated.
