Fall 2019 featured an intercultural cooking experience for students of Writing 101 (Freshman Composition). It was a collaboration between AUN, Universidad San Francisco de Quito and Flame University.
A series of cooking training sessions offered students the opportunity to prepare intercultural dishes. The students formed groups to collaborate and share ideas on different native dishes.
The Director of the Writing Center, Mrs. Emilienne Akpan, worked with two faculty members from South America and Asia.
"One of the major things was to learn about each other's culture as being a necessary factor for the interschool connectivity, using writing as a driving factor in order to have a connection with the ex-pat communities in AUN."
Food was first established as a connecting factor at a session in the connection course offered by AUN. The students learned about prominent dishes in different communities, the ingredients used to prepare them, and the processes involved.
"This served as an avenue to get the students acquainted with the processes involved in writing such as grammar, word composition, the conceptualization of ideas, and development of thoughts which narrowed down to the foundation of their essays."
Students also developed their post connection experience, learned various skills such as interviewing, speaking on camera and social skills to enhance their intra- and interpersonal communication potentials.
The intercultural connection between AUN, Universidad San Francisco de Quito and Flame University came about as a result of AUN’s membership of the Global Liberal Arts Alliance (GLAA).
