Dear AUN Students, Faculty, and Staff

Today we celebrate the 61st anniversary of Nigeria’s independence. I am so happy to be here to share this celebration with you.  Happy to celebrate the birth of a new nation created by the very rich and ancient cultures of this great nation. Happy to be back here in a country I have come to consider as my second home.

I believe, as I am sure you believe, that a great future lies ahead.  During the lifetimes of our AUN students, Nigeria will become the third most populous country in the world. We are here at AUN to help our students, Nigeria’s future leaders, gain the skills and wisdom necessary to guide this nation as it becomes a respected global power.

As we all know, Nigeria today faces many challenges: challenges of poverty, ill-health, illiteracy, environmental degradation, and violence. It is our mission at AUN to understand the roots of these problems and to generate viable solutions. To help chart a course ahead for a democratic, prosperous, peaceful, and just Nigeria.

I believe that our students, the talented youth of this country, the students of the American University of Nigeria, can lead the way. We are all here to do what we can to help them in that quest.

Happy Independence Day to all AUM Students, Faculty, and Staff.
