The American University of Nigeria (AUN) was established in 2004 by Nigeria’s former Vice President, His Excellency Atiku Abubakar.
Conceived as Africa’s first Development University, its mission is to promote service-learning and to educate leaders who will be prepared to tackle the development issues of Nigeria and Africa. The university offers an American-style education modeled after the curriculum of American universities, using the latest in internet technology and e-learning resources.
AUN is seeking a motivated Assistant Professor/Associate/Full Professor of English Language and Literature in the Department of English Language and Literature (ELL) who will be responsible for teaching, research and community service as may be requested by the Dean. The candidate contributes to preparing students to be applied, critical thinkers and problem solvers through innovative teaching and research. S/he will work closely with the Chair and Dean of the school in formulating and implementing course structures that would translate to effective teaching and learning of courses in line with the development philosophy of the American University of Nigeria. Besides the teaching responsibilities, the successful candidate is also expected to contribute to the department’s administration and scholarly work by carrying out and disseminating high quality research.
The post-holder will be required to instruct courses, both introductory and advanced levels, in line with his or her area of expertise. The successful candidate must have a Ph.D in English Language and Literature at the time of applying. The area of specialization should be Language or Linguistics, with at least five (5) years of university-level teaching experience. The candidate should be able to teach courses such as Semantics, Syntax, phonology, writing among other courses. The candidate should also be able to do other departmental and university-wide duties as assigned to them. S/he will possess established, or potential to establish, record of excellence in teaching, research and service.
Candidates should possess a strong record of academic publications in reputable peer-reviewed journals, book chapters, and other artistic renditions commensurate with career stage. International experience is preferred.
Strong written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills are required. The right candidate must have a strong command of English language.

Job Purpose |
The English Language and Literature Department has two concentrations: Literature, and Language. 1) The successful candidate will teach courses in Language, and writing. 2) Conduct research and publish papers in rigorous peer-reviewed journals. 3) Promote the department’s research and scholarly activities by presenting research findings in seminars and conferences. 4) Supervise research projects, tutor and mentor students. 5) Lead or be part of other committees aimed at promoting research, curriculum development, staff welfare etc. 6) Contribute to AUN’s community service and development. 7) Other duties as assigned by the Chair or the Dean. |
