Nursing
Bachelor of Science (B.NSc.)
School of Basic Medical and Allied Health Sciences
The American University of Nigeria operates a concept-based and practice-ready curriculum similar to those offered at American universities. This approach fosters deeper learning that is transferable and relevant to current healthcare realities, while promoting active learning and critical thinking among students.
In response to the increasing complexity of health conditions in contemporary hospital settings, the program is designed to produce practice-ready nurses equipped with strong clinical knowledge, technical skills, critical thinking ability, effective communication, professionalism, and management competence.
The Nursing Program is supported by experienced faculty and strengthened through partnerships with institutions such as the University of Northern Iowa. These collaborations provide enriched learning through lectures and immersive simulations that enhance students’ clinical practice and readiness.
The program builds a solid foundation in the basic and social sciences from the 100 level with other students. This is followed by courses in the life sciences and basic medical sciences from the second year, providing a transition into professional nursing education.
Nursing courses are introduced from the second year and continue systematically, covering core nursing courses across four major areas of clinical practice. Professional courses are supported by laboratory work and clinical skills acquisition to help learners develop practical competence. Many of these courses include direct contact with patients and their families in homes, communities, hospitals, and other approved practice settings.
