AUN Academy Premiers ICT Day

AUN Academy Premiers ICT Day

AUN Academy held its first ICT Day on November 7, 2019, at the Community Hall.

It was a day set aside for students to put into practice the various technical skills they learned in the classroom.

The skills on display include Internet of Things (IoT), how to connect and use a projector, design of a calculator, how to use the abacus for calculation, computer hardware troubleshooting, interclass quiz competitions, keyboard shortcuts, fun facts about computers, web page design from scratch, computer virus presentations, and dances.

A Grade 11 student, Inayat Sani Haliru, who demonstrated electric energy conservation using the concept of IoT, said he was inspired by people's poor energy habit of leaving lights on while they go to bed.

"In the hostels, our homes and so many other places, I see lights and electronics left switched on while people sleep. This is a total waste of energy and I felt it should be conserved."

The easiest way to do this is by using a mobile app to remotely control all forms of home electronic devices from any location we are, he said.

A Grade 7 student, Mujjalo Abba Tahir, demonstrated how to connect the projector to the computer and set it properly to have an excellent display.

"Not everyone knows how to connect projectors to computers and use them effectively. So, I am delighted to do this."

A Grade 12 student, Abubakar Haruna, whose ambition is to become a software engineer, designed a simple arithmetic calculator using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. He explained the functionalities of the calculator.

The audience gave Mr. Haruna values to compute and the calculator successfully processed it and produced accurate results.

A Grade 12 student, Akachukwu Nyamu, said his participation in the quiz competition made him realize that ICT is an interesting field and people of all age ranges should be involved in technology because it is inevitable in today's world.

As for Jemima Eliasa of Grade 8, many people out there hear the word "Abacus" often; they don't know how it looks, what it's meant for, and how to use it.

For this reason, she decided to show her colleagues and other guests at the event what abacus is and how to use it for calculation.

Head of ICT, Rabiu Holly Mujah, who moderated the event said, "We believe in our students and that's why we have empowered them with skills that would help them excel in life.

"We are ever willing to enhance their skills and talents."

"Thanks to our seasoned Administrator, Mrs. Nkem Uzowulu, for our first-ever ICT day," he added.

A Grade 7 student in the audience, Oluchi Osuagwu, felt the event was educative as she has learned a lot about computers and technology. "And the dance display also made it entertaining. I'm grateful and happy to be at AUN Academy because it's a great opportunity. My mom tells me, 'Not everyone has what you have; you should always value it."

This event demonstrates AUN Academy's enthusiasm in grooming young talents who use their creativity to build viable solutions to local problems using existing and trending technologies.
