The American University of Nigeria (AUN) and the Association of National Accountants of Nigeria (ANAN) are exploring ways to help AUN accounting students move from university education into professional practice through training, mentorship, and career development opportunities.
The discussions took place on Monday, October 12, 2026, when an ANAN delegation led by its President and Chairman of Council, Professor Chief Hajiya Zuwaira Talatu Kishimi, FCNA, visited AUN to meet with university management and accounting students.
Professor Kishimi said the visit provided an opportunity to introduce students to ANAN and encourage them to pursue professional qualifications after graduation. “On graduation from the university here, they could also come to our college to become members of our association,” she said.
She explained that ANAN’s professional training pathway includes a one-year program at the Nigerian College of Accountancy in Kwall, Plateau State, followed by a three-month internship before induction.
Welcoming the discussions, AUN President Professor DeWayne Frazier expressed interest in collaboration in joint research, guest lectures, academic resource sharing, and entrepreneurship initiatives. Such activities could give students greater exposure to professional practice while complementing the knowledge they gain in the classroom.
Professor Frazier also reaffirmed AUN’s commitment to preparing graduates to contribute meaningfully to society, describing the institution as “a private university with a public mission.” He highlighted the importance of practical learning and ethical integrity in preparing students for the responsibilities of their chosen professions.
Both institutions expressed a commitment to exploring formal arrangements for mentorship and career development for AUN accounting students.
