AUN PRESS RELEASE: American University of Nigeria Celebrates Historic Top Ranking by Times Higher Education

Yola, Adamawa State, 5th December, 2024

The American University of Nigeria (AUN) celebrates a significant recognition by ranking first in the 2024 Times Higher Education (THE) Sub-Saharan University Rankings. This UK-based organization is renowned for its annual World University Rankings, which are among the most influential assessments of university performance worldwide. In this year’s rankings, AUN stood out as the best university in Nigeria out of 267 institutions across the country. Additionally, AUN has made a mark on the continental stage, securing the 12th position in Africa.

Dr. Dewayne Frazier, President of AUN, expressed pride in the university’s accomplishment, attributing the success to its unwavering commitment to academic excellence and community impact. “Challenges in society are inevitable, especially in emerging democracies around the world,” Dr. Frazier stated. “While we cannot control these challenges, we can make sure we learn from them and respond proactively.”

He emphasized that the university’s strategies align closely with the ranking criteria, particularly highlighting student engagement. Dr. Frazier credited AUN’s founder for envisioning the institution as a catalyst for positive change in the region, stating, “Being the top-ranked university in all of Nigeria is a testament to our dear founder’s vision for AUN to be a catalyst for positive change.”

Celebrating this milestone, the Founder, His Excellency Atiku Abubakar, commended the leadership of the University for its commitment to excellence. He also paid tribute to the late Prof. Robert Pastor, Vice President of International Affairs at American University in Washington, D.C., acknowledging his role in providing the intellectual foundation for establishing AUN. He similarly extolled late Alhaji Ahmed Joda, the Pioneer Chairman of the AUN Board of Trustees, describing him as a "leader who played a crucial role in guiding the trustees of this university with determination, which was instrumental in shaping the foundation of this university."

AUN distinguishes itself through its American-styled liberal arts education, blending global standards with local relevance. This latest ranking underscores the university’s mission to cultivate global change makers, reflecting its ongoing efforts to instil leadership and innovation among students.

As AUN celebrates this prestigious recognition, it reinforces its status as a leading University in Nigeria, serving as a beacon of excellence in a rapidly evolving academic landscape. The university’s leadership is determined to continue pushing the boundaries of transformative education and ground-breaking research to further enhance its global reputation.
