AUN Senior's Design Delves into DEEP AI

Software Engineering senior Nsikak Imoh has developed a facial recognition model for the regulation of security and access to resources using Artificial Intelligence (AI).

The program was developed to help with the identification of students and to overcome all the hassles associated with the processes of verification of students and other members of the university community.

The system, using a camera device will be able to pick up faces and identify them instantly, with names and ID numbers. The model was presented at SITC's Senior Poster Design Project (SDP) exhibition in the fall semester. Associate Professor Abubakar Sadiq Hussaini coordinates the exhibition.

The Software Engineering major said he designed the program to ease the process of verification and identification of students, especially at the main gates upon resumption. He noticed the long process of identifying students as he resumed school last semester, causing long queues and stress to the students.

With a facial recognition device, Nsikak Imoh believes the rigor of identification can be eliminated by allowing people to be identified within seconds. He also believes it will improve security during university events by identifying members and non-members of the community.

He is confident his model can promote discipline among students by reducing the level of truancy. It will also reduce the level of damage on university property since the device will be positioned in different areas of classes and residence halls and can identify culprits.

Reflecting on his time at AUN, the graduating senior said he is more than satisfied with experiences in-class and out-of-class. He added that AUN has opened his eyes to a lot of possibilities, and great things he can achieve in the future.
