AUN Women's Leadership Council Walks to Raise Awareness on Breast Cancer

On Friday, October 22, 2021, the Women's Leadership Council (WLC) organized an annual walk across the campus to raise awareness of breast cancer. The WLC is an AUN club that uses various activities and events to empower women and girls. The goal is for every woman to feel strong and confident in her skin.

Breast cancer is the most frequent invasive cancer in women, and it is also a major cause of death around the world. Cancer is becoming more widespread and dangerous in Nigeria and Africa, with over 200,000 reported cases per year and many more women becoming vulnerable.

"This month was chosen for the breast cancer event since October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month," says the President of AUN WLC, Ifunanya Anyene, a senior majoring in law. Through the walk, which we publicized through our social media handle, we hope to raise awareness of the condition by emphasizing the causes of breast cancer so that women are aware of the preventive measures to take and other necessary details."

During the walk, the students held self-decorated shirts, posters, and balloons while shouting words of optimism. "I joined the walk because of its goal and I love everything that helps support or empower women," said Chidere Enwerem, a junior in information systems and member of the WLC.

Pink was a vital component of the walk to signify the official cancer color. With that being said, other fun activities are held during the semester by the WLC to represent women and to demonstrate their genuine potential. More information can be found on their Instagram account, @wlcaun.
