FMC Surgeon at AUN, speaks on Breast Cancer

FMC Surgeon at AUN, speaks on Breast Cancer

The lead surgeon at the Federal Medical Center (FMC) Yola, Dr. Wadunga Dauda, was at AUN on October 29, 2019, to deliver an awareness lecture on breast cancer.

He said many breast cancer cases are hereditary although other sources of the disease are yet to be completely unraveled.

Attendees learned about the early signs, causes, types, stages, and the appropriate treatment of breast cancer in women.

Some of the early signs include swelling of the breast, bleeding from the nipples, development of tumors in the breast and frequent pain around the breast.

"The signs of breast cancer in both women and men are similar but not every pain in the breast is a symptom of cancer."

He further encouraged proper self-breast examination within seven to 10 days after menstruation as the breast tissues are tender at that particular period.

Two palliative nurses, Pauline Dzauma and Timna Ibrahim, alongside a female surgical resident, Dr. Hadiza Muhammad Kabir, conducted the breast cancer screening and examination session with AUN students.

The medical personnel confirmed that none of the students examined have the disease or symptoms for it.

Two breast cancer survivors, Rabi Sani and Vasti Nuhu, were also present at the event as a way of showing appreciation to AUN for financial assistance and support.

A second-year Biomedical Science Major, Faith Birigeni, who actively participated in the program, noted that it is very informative because its benefits to the society cannot be overemphasized.

"I got to learn about the different stages of breast cancer, suitable treatments at each stage and how to conduct self-breast cancer check."

The event was organized by the Women Leadership Council in conjunction with the Public Health Club, and the AUN Clinic.
