Theatre Club Play Highlights Mental Health Issues

On November 14, the Mental Health Awareness Club collaborated with the Theater Club to perform a play on mental health. It was the second play by the Theater Club for the semester.

Preceding the play was a talk on mental Health by two members of the Mental Health Awareness Club.

They enlightened the audience on the existence of mental health problems in our society.

The play, 'A Helping Hand', featured a girl who was raped and became mentally affected by sexual abuse. She joined a mental health support group where she began to gradually regain healing following her encouragement to share her story like others.

President of the Mental Health Awareness Club, a final year Marketing major, Ms. Riyachat Haruna, said the collaboration for the play is intended to bring to the university community how their organization is trying to end the stigma of mental health and the sicknesses associated with it.

"We have a support group here on campus and we hold our meetings on Thursdays by 7 pm."

President of AUN Theatre Club, fourth-year Law major, Odinaka Okemini, said promoting the awareness of mental health issues will further reduce the effect that severe mental health illnesses could cause others in society.

Third-year Communications & Multimedia major, Dahlina Fwa, was one of the actors in the play. Besides being a member of the Theatre Club, his involvement in playing one of the roles is to help pass the message about mental health illness, he says.

There were interludes of poems by students. Third-year English Language major, Olugbenga Jacobs, was one of the poets who entertained the audience with his poem on the need to stop racism.

President Dekle, Vice President Byron Bullock, and AVP Nourah Bamalli were among the top management staff who attended the event. The club Advisor, an Assistant Professor in the English Language Department, Dr. Mohamed Tristan Purvis, was also in attendance.
