All Hallows' Eve, or Halloween, is a celebration observed worldwide, traditionally at the end of October. It has roots in an ancient Celtic culture where it was observed to celebrate the New Year. It became a secular community holiday in the early 20th century.
The Campus Activities Board (CAB) and Office of Student Activities & Involvement (OSAI) did not disappoint this year. After a year-long hiatus, Halloween was again celebrated in AUN. In keeping with tradition, CAB put together a weekend of scares and fun. It came at the perfect time to help ease the midterm stress and the events kicked off with a movie screening.
This year, the twelfth installment of the Halloween series, 'Halloween Kills,' was screened. Screams filled the atmosphere as the slasher film's characteristic jump scares intended to affect the students did just that. Pieces of popcorn were seen flying through the air at different points in the film as the audience was glued to their seats with excitement.
To further immerse the audience into the experience, there were figures disguised in masks in the hall, which helped set the tone of the auditorium. It was gasp after gasp and scream after scream as Michael Myers went on yet another ritual bloodbath.
"Halloween isn't typical Nigerian culture but it's an exciting season. I don't like horror, but the ambience is nice. It's always nice to see new things", admitted Adedayo Onigbanjo, Senior majoring in CMD.
"The movie was selected because of the notoriety of the Halloween franchise. All of the movies in the Halloween franchise are scary. I wore a mask to scare the students; this was to immerse the students in the experience of the movie", said Phoebe Phillips, CMD Major and Freshman CAB Member.
