On Friday, October 22, the Student Team Advancing Regional Sustainability (STARS) club launched a Go Green campaign. The campaign was held to create awareness on water and energy conservation and waste and litter management in the university.

The president of Stars Club and software engineering, senior Favor Sukat, explained that the club is partnering with the Office of Sustainability in this year's Go Green campaign because the importance of sustainability in the light of global warming cannot be overemphasized. She called on students and members of the AUN community not to relent in their efforts to always ensure lights are turned-off while leaving their residence halls, homes, and offices.

"Through similar campaigns over the past semesters, the STARS club has recruited more students to embrace a sustainability culture here on campus."

Zahok Madaki and Miracle Davide, seniors majoring in Software Engineering, also lauded the campaign and the accompanying message.

"I love this campaign because it helps to sustain the universe," said Zahok.

The Director of the AUN Sustainability Office, Mr. Raymond Obindu, explained that the high amount of waste in Nigeria greatly affects the environment causing air pollution, flood, traffic upheavals and harm to the ecosystem. He added that the practice of dumping plastics and waste on the road in Nigeria should be discouraged entirely, and citizens should learn proper waste disposal methods and recycling.

"One of the problems of sustainability is compliance. People do not comply with being sustainable, they are used to throwing waste all over the surroundings. People also think it's childish and do not take part in recycling because they are not well informed on sustainability."

Mr. Obindu encouraged the younger generation to cultivate the habit of tree planting and get used to sustainability habits to save the environment.
