Nigerian Women’s Right to Health

Nigerian Women’s Right to Health

Congratulations are in order for Assistant Professor of Law, Dr. Jennifer Heaven Mike of the School of Law at the American University of Nigeria. She has just published a book titled: “Women, Medicine Law, and the TRIPS Agreement: Right to Health”.

Published by Princeton Publishing Company, the book aims to promote Nigerian women’s right to health. Especially for access to life-saving medicines to live long and healthy lives. This will in turn enhance human capital development in Nigeria.

The book argues for women’s access to essential pharmaceuticals at an affordable cost within the scope of patent law and rights. It appraises the public health implications of the patent protection of pharmaceuticals in the international intellectual property (IP) regime of the Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS Agreement), and the existing flexibilities, with particular emphasis on the national patent system in Nigeria.

This interdisciplinary study also suggests ways in which the patent system can be more human development and human rights friendly in the interest of public health, particularly, the use of the TRIPS flexibilities and Exemptions to enhance access to life-saving medicines.

In the classroom, Dr. Mike teaches Human Rights Law, Intellectual Property Law, and Criminal Law. She obtained her Ph.D. at the  University of Exeter, LLM (International Trade and Maritime Law)- London Metropolitan University. She also serves as Head of  Department, Public International Law and doubles as Director, Centre for Peace, Human Rights and Development Studies in AUN.
