The President of the American University of Nigeria, Dr. Dawn Dekle announces the appointment of Professor Alkasum Abba as a pioneer member of the Governing Council of the American University of Nigeria.
This appointment is in line with the regulatory requirements of the National Universities Commission. Professor Abba’s track record of academic achievements and impeccable character set him miles ahead of other worthy candidates.
Alkasum Abba was born on 20th May 1953 in Yola. He graduated from Ahmadu Bello University, ABU, in 1977 with a combined honors degree in History and Government. He joined the Department of History, ABU in 1978. He obtained his MA and Ph.D. in History in the same Department. He was a non-degree research student at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London in 1989/1990. He became Sole Administrator and later Vice-Chancellor of Adamawa State University, Mubi, 2007-2014. He has written and edited several books and articles. Among them are the History of Yola, 1809-1914; The Northern Elements Progressive Union and the Politics of Radical Nationalism in Nigeria, 1938-1960; The Politics of Mallam Aminu Kano, etc. He is the Secretary of a Zaria based NGO, CEDDERT, and is currently the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman Governing Council, Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi.

The AUN Governing Council undertakes among many other responsibilities, the general management of the affairs of the university including appointing principal officers of the university. AUN’s strategic drive in the coming years has been focused on entrepreneurship, development, and research. The Governing Council is pivotal to the achievement of these lofty goals.
