SGA President Halima Mohammed Counsels New Students

President of the Student Government Association (SGA), Ms. Halima Mohammed, has counseled new students to quickly discover their niche and embrace the challenge of change in their new environment.

Ms. Halima told the newest constituency members that the American University of Nigeria is sufficiently endowed to provide the mentorship and motivation they need to succeed academically and prepare them for life after graduation.

First, she advised them to discover their passion and mission in college, as AUN is equipped with mentors and resources to support their ambition.

"When I first arrived at AUN, many of my classmates and I were timid. We used to be hesitant to speak up in class and let our voices be heard, but now we are confident in our appearance and demeanor. This is how AUN transforms you, and I am confident that you will also break out of your respective bubbles and comfort zones and accomplish incredible things because our faculty and student body are phenomenal."

Regarding achieving academic excellence, the SGA President exhorted new students to make the most of their time and the vast opportunities and resources available at the university, adding that AUN's liberal arts style of education has a distinctive learning approach that encourages critical thinking and creativity, and those who complete it stand out in their respective careers.

"You will quickly realize that choosing this university was one of the best decisions you have made for your future after attending AUN. With the abundance of university resources available to you, such as the Writing Center, the E Library, and the honor society, you have everything you need to not only survive, but thrive", she told the entering students.

Ms. Halima urged the students to engage in activities outside of the classroom that would positively stimulate their minds, as well as to seek assistance when and where it was necessary.

"There is a vast range of extracurricular activities from which to choose. There are numerous clubs and societies, such as the Art Club, Leadership Society, and Honor society. You can always seek assistance from the Dean of Student Affairs, his staff, or any member of the student government. If you also feel the need to speak with a psychologist, one is easily accessible."
