On October 13, 2024, the AUN female soccer team won the maiden edition of the AUN President's Cup tournament by defeating the Lutheran Seminary soccer team by 2- 0.
The three-day female soccer tournament, a brainchild of the Office of the President of the American University of Nigeria, was more than a sporting event; it was a catalyst to ignite the passion of football lovers, while encouraging the participation of female soccer players in the Yola metropolis.
Teams that participated in the tournament include AUN Stallions A, School of Nursing & Midwifery, and Yolde Pate. Others are AUN Team B, and Mbamba Seminary.
The AUN Stallions took the first lead in the finals encounter through Jessica Chagidi, a CMD freshman, in the 27th minute. The Stallion's second goal came through a shot from Tirzah, also a CMD major, in the 39th minute, giving AUN a solid lead before halftime.
AUN President, Dr. DeWayne Frazier, who donated the trophy and personally bankrolled the tournament, expressed appreciation for the huge turnout and participation of all teams
"It's so exciting to watch the strategy that goes into soccer. It's so exciting to watch the energy that goes into it, and the real motions even when playing soccer. I know I've had that many times in my own life, and honestly, this tournament was a great way to celebrate the weekend. This is the first time we organized the President's Cup for women's soccer, but it won't be the last time."
Dr. Charles Nche, dean of SITC and coach of the AUN male staff team, who watched all the games of the competition, lauded the organizers while expressing his optimism for the future of female soccer. "We have an opportunity here to make many girls be involved in playing football. Although girls have been playing football around here but we have not organized it as this, " he noted.
