Speaking at the University’s 17th Commencement Ceremony in Yola on Saturday, May 9th, 2026, Vice President Kashim Shettima, represented by the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), Prof. Abdullahi Ribadu, affirmed AUN’s role. He stated:

Commending the university’s vision at the same ceremony, VP Shettima noted:
"The American University of Nigeria stands as a beacon of hope and a model of what is possible when vision meets commitment in the education sector of our country.”
On the kind of graduates AUN is producing, the Vice President further added:
"AUN is not just producing graduates. It is producing leaders who will redefine Nigeria’s future through service, innovation, and integrity."
For many families choosing a university, academic reputation matters. But for parents sending their children to study away from home, safety and peace of mind are equally important. For parents from across Nigeria and around the world who have visited AUN or entrusted their children to the University, firsthand experience has challenged long-held perceptions.
Parents shared remarkably similar experiences. They spoke of a secure campus, a welcoming community, dedicated faculty and staff, and an educational environment that exceeded their expectations.
Mr. Ameki from Imo State admitted there was initial hesitation about sending his children to Yola.
"There was a lot of apprehension initially. But what I have noticed with AUN is that the people here are very friendly."

Mr. and Mrs. Curtis Dike from Port Harcourt, Rivers State, enrolled their son Israel in AUN’s Law program after years of hearing rumors about insecurity in the North.
"I remember when he was coming to AUN, I was not happy as a mother. We were scared because of the rumors we heard. But coming here is completely different. Since we arrived, there has been no sign of insecurity at all; it is entirely peaceful. Honestly, if anyone asks me, I will say one of the best places to stay in northern Nigeria is Yola, Adamawa State. My advice to anyone is to not listen to rumors. Bring your children to AUN. It is the best school in Nigeria." Israel graduated as President of the Honor Society and Class Speaker during the 17th Commencement ceremony.
Mr. Rex Ezenwoko, a parent at the Spring 2025 President’s Dinner, recalled arriving at Yola International Airport: "As soon as we stepped out, we were greeted by a group of enthusiastic young people who asked if we were headed to AUN. Their friendliness and knowledge of the area immediately reassured me that we had chosen the right place."
Mrs. Ememma Maria Ophiong, whose daughter Veronica matriculated Fall 2026, highlighted AUN’s culture of care: "After travel fatigue caused me to miss my scheduled airport pickup, an AUN staff member and the University shuttle remained at the airport waiting for me. I was thoroughly impressed by that act of service. I want the world to know that you can bring your children here and they will be assured of academic excellence, networking with the right people, and all the benefits that accrue from this."
