It will be a busy day on Wednesday, November 8, as plans are underway to commemorate the 2023 World STEM Day at the American University of Nigeria. The Marketing and Communications Department, in collaboration with the AUN Honor Society, the AUN Engineering Students Society, and with the support of the AUN School of Engineering, has invited 14 top Secondary Schools in Adamawa State to join in marking the global event at the technology-intensive AUN campus.
On that day, the AUN STEM Initiative for Adamawa State – a year-long STEM workshop education and competition for participating schools to be jointly organized by the AUN Honor Society and AUN Engineering Students Society, will be introduced. Winners will be recognized during the annual Founder's Day. President of the AUN Honor Society, Ms. Saffiya Auwal, who will be giving an overview of the AUN STEM initiative for Adamawa State at the event, has assured of the readiness of the Honor Society members to mentor senior secondary school students in Adamawa State under the STEM scheme in developing 21st-century skills like critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, and problem-solving.
President DeWayne Frazier will give a keynote address, while the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, Professor Attahir Yusuf, will offer unique insights on the contributions of STEM to national development.
The interim dean of the AUN School of Engineering, Dr. Abubakar Sadiq Hussaini, and the associate dean of the School of Arts and Sciences, Dr. James Adewale, will present career possibilities in their respective Schools under STEM.
AUN student resource persons are also expected to deliver papers at the event.
Instructor and Student Ambassador, AUN-Huawei ICT Academy, Mr. Somtochukwu David Okereke, will present a paper on 'Technology and Innovation in STEM'; President of AUN Engineering Students Society (ESS), Mr. Aliyu Ahmed, will present on 'STEM Connecting the World'; Vice President, ESS, Ms. Zainab Malabu, on 'Female Underrepresentation in STEM,' while 4th year Electrical/Electronic student and ESS executive, Ms. Maryam HammanJoda will present on 'Young People's Perspectives in STEM'.
Senior University administrators, students, faculty, and staff members are expected at the event, which will be held in the auditorium of the new AUN School of Law building from 10 a.m.
