AUN’s Class of 2024 Valedictorian, Efezino Onyeke - My Dad Inspired my passion for Legal Education

Efezino Onyeke, the Valedictorian of the Class of 2024 at the American University of Nigeria, shared an inspiring story during her graduation speech. She spoke of her journey to becoming a lawyer and how her father's work in the legal field motivated her to pursue the same path.

The young Lawyer revealed how her mother dressed her up like a lawyer during her nursery and primary school 'career days.' These early experiences, however, paled in comparison to the profound influence her father's work had on her. Accompanying him to a High Court and witnessing his skill and dedication as he disproved 6 out of the 10 counts of charges brought against her father's client was a transformative moment for her. She was inspired to follow in her father's footsteps and bring hope to the hopeless in society.

"I really want is to help people faced with serious legal problems, help them to lift off weights on their shoulders," she stated.

Reflecting on her journey, Efezino acknowledged the pivotal role of AUN in her preparation. She noted, 'AUN has prepared me holistically to face the challenge.' She urged her fellow graduates to recognize and appreciate the university's contribution to their growth and development and not to be deterred by challenges.

Efezino urged the graduating students to hold onto the inspiration that led them to choose their respective courses. She emphasized that this inspiration should be a driving force in their real-life journeys, where challenges are inevitable. She encouraged them to face these challenges with determination and never lose sight of their passions. She stated, 'AUN has prepared us well to face all challenges by providing high-quality education and exposes us to real-world experiences through community service.'

The Valedictorian also served as the Law Student Society's treasurer and later became the President. She was also a member of the Honor Society and other campus organizations and societies. She was a true stallion.
